What to Include on Your Board Meeting Agenda

A well-written agenda for your board meeting is the basis for each boardroom meeting. It will help you determine how involved your board members are in the meeting, list everything you intend to discuss and provide you with a head start in writing notes that record your decision.

Idealerweise, the agenda of your board meeting should contain the section devoted to reporting. This is where department chairs and heads of committees can share important information with the rest of the board. Based on the requirements of your company, this could include reports from the most important committees and departments, such as the finance director, executive director or the nominating committee.

The next thing you should do is “new business”. This is the place where you and your co-workers will discuss ideas that were brought up during your previous meeting and how best to move forward. This is a great time to have a discussion and debate so be sure to leave plenty of time for it. Most of the time, your board will decide to modify or table, or even send an agenda item for another committee to take care of.

It is commonplace to include special announcements and messages of congratulations in the new section of business. This is an opportunity to show your appreciation to the board members and their contributions.
